The Chemistry Department of the Science School of the University of Porto created by the 18th of March 1996 School Statutes, results from a genealogic line initiated with the Laboratorio Chimico da Academia Polytechnica do Porto (the Chemical Laboratory of the Polytechnic Academy of Porto), whose setting out goes back to the year 1837. Since 1911, with the creation of the University of Porto and the Science School, Chemistry became the 2nd Group of the 2nd Section (Physics and Chemistry), and remained that way till the appearance of the Chemistry Department.
At the end of the 60s it took advantage of the conditions then created for the development of the Portuguese University. Therefore, in the mid sixties the Department was in the front line in what setting out doctorate and scientific research programs in Portugal was concerned.
At the end of 1995, the Chemistry Department was moved from its traditional location in the Science School building (at Gomes Teixeira square) to the new building of the University Campus of Campo Alegre.
At present, the Chemistry Department of the Science School of the University of Porto is an organic unit of degree and post-degree teaching, of fundamental and applied research, of support to technological development, of services provided to the community and cultural divulging in related domains, included in the Schools aims. |
